2. Organization

Upon convening pursuant to Rule 1 (a) hereof, the order of business or organization shall be:

(a) Election of a clerk for the time being.

(b) Reading of the official announcement and designation of all members elected to the House of Representatives as certified by the Secretary of State.

(c) Calling of the roll.

(d) Consideration of and action upon the credentials of the persons entitled to membership in the House of Representatives.

(e) Administration of the oath of office.

1. Convening

(a) At 10 o'clock a.m. no later than the second Wednesday of January of each odd-numbered year, the House of Representatives shall be called to order by the Speaker of the immediately preceding session of the House or, in the Speaker's absence, by the majority floor leader for the convening session of the House. The House shall then proceed to organize as hereinafter provided for in Rule 2.

The Colorado House of Representatives is comprised of 65 Representatives. 

  • Representatives are elected every two years from the district in which they live, and they are limited to serving eight consecutive years.
  • Each Representative District consists of approximately 88,800 citizens.
  • The Speaker of the House is elected by the full membership of the House.
  • The General Assembly convenes each year no later than the second Wednesday in January and adjourns in May.  Constitutionally legislative sessions may not exceed 120 calendar days.

The Colorado Senate is comprised of 35 Senators who are elected to four-year terms. Each Senator is limited to serving two consecutive terms. The President presides over the Senate during the legislative session, after being chosen by the majority caucus and subsequently elected to that office by a majority vote of all the members of the Senate. Legislative session begins no later than the second Wednesday in January and lasts up to 120 calendar days.
