Senator Hill, chair, called the meeting to order. Senator Coram, sponsor, presented House Bill 17-1003 which concerns a strategic plan to address teacher shortages in Colorado. He explained why the bill is necessary, especially in many rural school districts. Senator Coram answered questions from the committee.



The following people testified on the bill:



11:01 AM -- Kachina Weaver, Legislative Liaison, Colorado Department of Higher Education (DHE), spoke in support of the bill. Ms. Weaver answered questions from the committee.



11:04 AM -- Robert Mitchell, Director of Teacher Preparation, DHE, spoke in support of the bill. Dr. Mitchell answered questions from the committee.

11:27 AM -- Leslie Colwell, representing the Colorado Children's Campaign, spoke in support of the bill.

11:36 AM -- Chelsea Henkel, representing Stand for Children, spoke in support of the bill. Ms. Henkel answered questions from the committee.



11:47 AM -- Robert Edwards, representing himself as a teacher, spoke in support of the bill. Mr. Edwards answered questions from the committee.

There were no more witnesses and Senator Hill closed public testimony. Senator Coram gave closing comments to the bill. Senator Hill distributed amendment L.002 (Attachment A) and explained the amendment.
