Joint Budget Committee Staff Internship Program:

Legislative Budget and Policy Assistant Position

 

Job description:

The Colorado Joint Budget Committee (JBC) is made up of six elected members of the state legislature who are responsible for developing the annual state budget. The JBC Staff is a non-partisan legislative agency that supports the JBC and the Legislature. As part of the internship program, assistants will work closely with non-partisan JBC Staff analysts to help the JBC review the management, operations, programs, and fiscal needs of state agencies.

Analysts evaluate state agency budget requests and provide recommendations to the JBC through written documents and public testimony. Assistants will support this process, develop issue briefs on specified topics impacting state agencies, and present these issues to the JBC in public meetings. Assistants will also review and summarize existing research on policy choices and the allocation of resources and perform other tasks that support the office.

Qualifications and skills:

  • Background in policy research, data analysis, or public finance;
  • Interest in non-partisan work and budget issues;
  • Strong research, writing, and presentation skills; and

Experience working with Excel or other databases.

Preferred qualifications: a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; coursework in public policy and administration or a related field; and eligibility for academic credit for the internship.

Compensation and schedule:

Interns will be compensated at a rate of $22.00 per hour, will receive a $10.00 per day travel stipend, and must be available to work 20 hours per week between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm Monday-Friday. This is an in-person internship from September 16th, 2024 to December 19th, 2024. If desired, there may be an option to extend the position through mid-May 2025.
