BUILDING HOURS

The Colorado State Capitol building is open to the public from 7:30am – 5:00pm Monday through Friday. The building is closed on weekends and most Federal holidays.

If we are unable to schedule a tour for you, you are welcome to self-guide throughout the building but note that you will not be able to visit the dome on a self-guided tour.

CAFETERIA

Breakfast, lunch, snack items and drinks are available at the Capitol Café, located in the basement of the Capitol.

GIFT DESK

Souvenirs including t-shirts, note cards, holiday ornaments, and a small selection of Capitol related books are available for sale at the Visitor Services desk on the first floor. We accept cash, check, or credit cards. Checks can be made out to the State of Colorado. For more information please call 303-866-2604.

PARKING - Buses

PARKING - Persons with Disabilities

A limited number of parking spaces are available first come first serve in the Capitol circle for visitors with disabled parking permits. Enter at 14th and Sherman and notify the Colorado State Patrol at the entrance to use these spots. Disability placards or license plates are required.

PARKING - Public

Parking is not available onsite at the Capitol. Metered parking and pay lots are located nearby.

PHOTOGRAPHY POLICY

Photographs are allowed and encouraged during your Capitol tour, but flash photography is not allowed in the Senate or House galleries during the legislative session.

PUBLIC BUILDING ENTRANCES

North entrance (Colfax Avenue and Sherman Street), first floor – public and group entrance
NOTE! Entering on Colfax requires walking up stairs

South entrance (14th Avenue and Sherman Street), basement (ground) level – visitors with special needs should use this entrance

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

The Capitol is located one block southeast of Civic Center Station, which can be accessed by light rail from the 16th Street Mall. Visit the RTD website for bus and light rail options and schedules - http://www.rtd-denver.com/.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

We are seeking enthusiastic and friendly volunteers with an interest in Colorado history and state government, who enjoy working with the public, to lead tours, staff the gift desk, museum and dome observation area, and provide visitors with concierge type services. WORK STUDY OPPORTUNITIES FOR MSUD AND UCD STUDENTS

Eligible work-study applicants with an interest in Colorado history and state government who enjoy working with the public are encouraged to apply for a work-study position at the Capitol. Capitol guides are responsible for leading tours, staffing the gift desk, museum, and dome observation area, providing visitors with concierge type services, and some light clerical work. SUMMER GUIDE OPPORTUNITIES

Each summer between May and August, Visitor Services offers several full-time temporary summer guide positions for college students. Applicants must be recent high school graduates enrolled in fall college courses, current college students, or have graduated in May before the summer guide position starts. PARKING - BUSES

Effective July 2016

  • All tour buses visiting the Capitol must load and unload all passengers on the corner of Grant and Colfax.   Grant is one way southbound.
  • Bus driver must remain on and move the bus after unloading passengers. 
  • No tour bus parking is allowed on Grant – loading and unloading ONLY. 
  • Tour buses may park on the East side (ONLY) of Broadway between the hours of 9:30-2:30.   TOUR BUSES ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PARK ON THE WEST SIDE OF BROADWAY.
  • For the safety of your passengers, LOADING AND UNLOADING ON BROADWAY IS NOT ALLOWED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.  This area will be monitored closely.

The restoration of Civic Center Station has made these changes necessary.  The project is expected to last until December 2018.

Please allow plenty of travel time to adjust to these changes in parking.  

Gallery Rules

Visitors are welcome to watch legislative proceedings from the public galleries on the 3rd floor. ADA seating is available in the galleries.

Please be respectful of Gallery rules:

  • Cell phones and pagers must be turned off.
  • Gentlemen must remove their hats.
  • Food, drink or water bottles are not permitted.
  • Signs or banners of any kind are prohibited. (As they are throughout the Capitol).

 

  • Visitors are not allowed to stand at railings nor place any belongings on the stairs or in the aisles. This includes the public, staff, legislators, lobbyists, legislative aides and interns, press.
  • Guests shall remain quiet at all times.
  • Applause and cheering are not allowed.
  • When the Speaker or President bangs the gavel and asks that everyone rise for the Morning Prayer, guests must stand.
